Plural Irregular Nouns Examples
Hello again! This time I’m reaching out regarding an English assignment my child is currently working on, which focuses on irregular plural nouns. They’re doing great with common examples like "man" becoming "men," but there are a few words they’re struggling with, such as “mouse” turning into “mice” and “tooth” becoming “teeth.” We’ve tried to work through it together, but I was hoping you could provide additional clarification or examples that might help reinforce these irregular forms.

Hi there, Cay Agaci.

Learning irregular plural nouns can really be tricky. Some follow certain rules while there are other irregular nouns that you just have to remember the plural form.

Here are more examples for you:

*People

  • child > children
  • woman > women
  • person > people

*Body

  • tooth > teeth
  • foot > feet

*Animals (there are nouns that have the same singular and plural form and there are nouns that have a totally different plural form)

  • a fish > many fish
  • deer > deer
  • shrimp > shrimp
  • tuna > tuna
  • goose > geese
  • ox > oxen

*Words that end in -f or -fe change the -f to -v before adding -es

  • life > lives (life - fe to v + es = li v es)
  • knife > knives
  • leaf > leaves
  • wife > wives
  • loaf > loaves

*Words that end in -is usually changed to -es

  • hypotheses > hypotheses (hypothesis - is to es = hypothes es)
  • crisis > crises
  • analysis > analyses
  • photosynthesis > photosyntheses
