What does "throw in the towel" mean?
Hi, Just a quick question from a parent eager to learn alongside my child: could you explain what 'throw in the towel' means? My little one's been hearing it a lot lately and I'd love to join in on their learning adventure!

Good day to you, So-min Jung.

In simple terms, to “throw in the towel” is to give up or to surrender. This phrase came from the sport boxing. When a fighter or his/her coach throws the towel in the ring, this means that they had given up the fight. It is the same as "raising the white flag".

We can use this if we ever feel like we can’t do anything about something anymore and we decide to stop putting in more effort.

“I threw in the towel after finishing three plates of food last New Year’s Eve. I felt so full that I couldn’t drink water anymore.”

I hope you won't throw in the towel when it comes to learning. More power to you!
