G`day! I was editing a story my son wrote, and he used the word "stupid" a lot, so I wanted to ask if you could suggest a better alternative for him to use which is less rude.

It's true that saying 'stupid' could be rude, so using synonymous words would be less harsh. There are a number of ways we can say this word: unintelligent, ignorant, simpleminded, vapid, foolish, dull-witted, witless, slow on the uptake.
