What is the difference between a "Colon" and a "Semicolon"?
Dear tutor, while helping my high schooler with English homework, they asked me when to use a colon versus a semicolon. Realizing I needed a refresher myself, I thought it best to reach out to you

Hey there!

Colon (:):

  • Use a colon to introduce something that comes after it.
  • Example: My favorite colors are: red, blue, and green.

Semicolon (;):

  • Use a semicolon to connect two related ideas in one sentence or link them together.
  • Example: I like pizza; my brother prefers pasta.

Overall,  a colon shows what's important, while a semicolon links things that go together.

Feel free to reach out if you need clarification on anything!
